Licence vs Franchise: The Financial Difference for Small Business Owners

By Daniela Davies, Licensing Manager · 19 October 2026 · 6 min read

If you want to run your own business with a proven system behind you, you'll usually come across two options: a franchise or a licence. Both give you a brand, systems and support. The big difference is how you pay for them, and that difference can have a real impact on what you keep as your business grows.

This article is general information only. It isn't financial or legal advice. Always get independent advice before signing any business agreement.

How franchise costs typically work

Every franchise is different, but franchise agreements commonly include:

Percentage-based fees mean the more you earn, the more you pay. That's not necessarily bad, because you're paying for the system and brand, but it does mean your costs climb as your revenue grows.

How the EziCleen licence works

The EziCleen licence is structured with fixed fees:

Those figures don't rise as your turnover does. If you work hard and grow your territory, the extra revenue you generate isn't eroded by a percentage-based royalty on top.

Why fixed fees matter

You keep more as you grow

With a fixed annual fee, your growth is your growth. Every additional job you win in your territory adds to your bottom line rather than to an ongoing royalty.

Predictable budgeting

Fixed costs are easier to plan around. You know what your licence will cost each year, which makes cash flow, pricing and investment decisions simpler.

Choice of income stream

EziCleen licensees choose from three income streams: cleaning, Diamon-Fusion® protective coatings, or solar care and maintenance. You can pick the one that best suits your skills and your local market.

Support without the overheads

You still get the things that make a system worth joining: a defined territory, leads from our website and AI assistant, your own landing page, operations and WHS manuals, pricing tools, training, product supply, ongoing support and a brand with 25 years of experience in protective coatings behind it.

What to compare, whichever way you go

Before you decide on any franchise or licence, line up the numbers side by side:

Get independent advice

Talk to an accountant about your cash flow and expected costs, and have a lawyer review any agreement before you sign. A good business opportunity will stand up to that scrutiny.
